Carbon black is a high-tech material with properties that conform to international standards and are crucial for determining the character of end products. For example, as a filler material, carbon black improves the mechanical characteristics of plastic, increases the abrasion-resistance of tires, and offers protection against heat and UV radiation. Depending on their characteristic properties, the special carbon black types are suitable for all different kinds of application.

The table below shows the impact of particle size and structure on the characteristic properties of carbon black. The specific surface becomes larger as particle diameters decline. For this reason carbon black with smaller particles absorbs greater amounts of oil.

Particle size & structure characterize the properties of CB

Since small particles also aggregate more easily than large ones, a smaller particle size results in increased viscosity. Blends with (“hard”) carbon blacks (N550 and smaller) of a small particle size and high structure solidify rubber compounds better and hence yield rubber products with high abrasion resistance and low elasticity.

These are particularly suitable for tire treads. Accordingly, the tire industry places the toughest requirements on the quality and properties of carbon black. Tests to determine the quality and applicability of the Pyrolyx carbon blacks which were conducted by renowned tire manufacturers independently of one another have yielded very positive results. Tests of the characteristics (surface, structure) have demonstrated that Pyrolyx carbon black achieves values that are similar to those of N326, and that it can replace N660 and N772. As the charts below show, Pyrolyx carbon black is between the so-called hard and soft carbon black types, which gives it a very broad application range.

High quality of the output materials

For the above reasons, the marketability of the Pyrolyx technology depends not only on the profitability and reliability of the plant but absolutely crucially on the quality of the output materials. Therefore, various independent institutes checked the final products that were achieved and have confirmed their excellent quality.

Bayer proves marketability

In late 2009, Bayer Technology Services in Leverkusen conducted a detailed due diligence investigation of the Pyrolyx technology. The experts attested the Pyrolyx technology great marketability without any qualifications. Below are the central statements of the report:

  • The Pyrolyx technology works. Given the research and development work conducted so far and the existing pilot plants, the upcoming scale-up is regarded as low-risk.
  • The production process is stable and superior to all other methods.
  • All end products of the method are sustainable recyclables which are perfectly suitable for further processing and profitable sale. The recovered carbon black meets the standards of classic carbon black varieties and moreover stands out for its extremely low pollution load. As filler material it is ideal for use in the rubber and plastics industry.
  • The production costs of Pyrolyx carbon black are considerably below those of traditionally produced carbon black types, which moreover crucially depend on the oil price. This significant competitive edge makes the business model profitable and a safe investment in the long run.
